Like, Keep Your Cool, Deathsmiles Is So Totally Kawaii!
Deathsmiles is a shmup being brought over to the states later this June by Aksys. It was originally developed by Cave, who are known for classics like DoDonPachi, Mushihimesama, and ESPgaluda.
Granted, most people play these sorts of games for the gameplay, but the screenshots from this game are enough to make anyone cringe. It’s nowhere near as bad as Castle Shikigami II, but Aksys did localize Castle Shikigami III with intentions of keeping the tradition alive with a weird translation.
I am confused as to why they would do something like this with Deathsmiles. It’s obviously a conscious choice on behalf of Aksys, and there has to be a reason for it. I just can’t seem to figure out what their intended target market is.
Hardcore fans of Cave will eat this right up. People who don’t like shmups might be attracted to the Gothic-Lolita aesthetic. Perhaps it’s trying to appeal to Chrono Cross fans with all of it’s double-language usage? I know all my friends who are into Lolita fashion talk like this, and I am certain they will buy this game because of the localization.
It might not be a big deal, but it is somewhat embarrassing for an overseas company with such a big local demographic to see it head in this direction.
[Netlabel] poisondreamer – She is Zero
Poisondreamer’s new album strikes like thunder today on the BFM netlabel. After years of no outside musicians on the netlabel, an artist so amazing comes along that it is worthy to be posted in our fine establishment.
Poisondreamer came from a spark when he realized noise and free improvisation is really a creative style of music. One can use anything to make music. It’s all art. Once poisondreamer realized he can loop himself drumming, or use a drum machine and add samples he gets from police sirens, to people talking to anti-drug PSA’s.
Poisondreamer is a man in his early 20s living in the state of Pennsylvania. He got his start in music when he received a drum set. He’s always been into drumming, and is also in a local indie band. However, his introduction to drumming, he says, has opened up a creativity window for him.
“I really like to focus on noise, noisecore and other experimental stuff, and I’m really influenced by old styled ragtime and jazz,” he said.
He mentions Merzbow, Sonic Youth, Atari Teenage Riot, and Navicon Torture Technologies as huge influences to his music.
Stream “Acid Drinking Water” for a taste of what the full album sounds like. If you enjoyed that, then grab the zip file to hear the other amazing tracks for free!

I am happy to formally announce that BFM Podcast is now part of the Draw Go Radio Network.
DrawGo started out as a Magic The Gathering podcast, but has expanded into further territories that include blogging, and other wicked cool endeavors.
We are honored to be a part of the network. I feel like DGR does their best to try to bring geeks etc. together, and so do we. Not only is it an honor, but it’s also a great privilege to be able to work together to attain this goal.
So if you’re into Magic The Gathering and also like the general geekery that BFM provides I would right+click on ‘Make Default Home page.’ As someone famous once said, “You get the best of both worlds!”

Anyone with a Playstation 3 has probably heard of the new reality TV show Sony’s been pumping out every week called The Tester.
The show has a full cast of unique characters, one of which goes by the name “Barmy.” This fella was known for being exceptionally awkward and saying the creepiest things. I feel that he represented a large majority of gamers out there, and it’s a shame he was voted off so quickly.
Now, I’m not saying that all gamers are exactly like this character, but many of us share certain socially awkward characteristics. Chances are you know some gamer guy exactly like Barmy.
This is what he looks like:
Parrots are zygodactyl!
This is a caption contest, so in order to further analyze the situation it would be in your best interest to watch the first episode of The Tester. It might be a bit painful to sit through, but it’s worth it for free stuff. Right? Right.
The contest starts immediately and ends a week from today. The two funniest captions will each receive 1 one-year membership to the ECA. Winners will be announced shortly thereafter. Please post your comments in the comment section and use a valid email address so that we can redeem your prize. Nobody except for me will be able to view your email address, so don’t worry about spam.
This contest is open to everyone. If you haven’t seen the tester, go here for details. I also hear they have clips on youtube.

I bought a Sega Pico a few weeks ago. The system was intended mostly for children, and the cartridges are considered “Storyware” as you go between games by flipping the page. It’s this little system that uses a stylus and 5 buttons.
There’s honestly not enough Sega Pico love on the internet, so I’m reuploading this video up on principle. I’m getting this game in the mail in a few weeks, but I figure we need something to watch in the mean time!

Give more of yourself to GIRL – Noby Noby Boy Lucky Week

For those of you who don’t check o–o very often [like me] you’ll be pleased to hear that Noby Noby Boy is having a lucky week!
What does this mean for you? Well, when you submit length to GIRL sometimes the fairy will randomly multiply it. For instance, I submitted 30,000 meters to GIRL, and fairy gave me 8x the amount I had originally. So for those of you who were frustrated by the fact we still had 75 billion more meters until mars, perhaps this will aid us in our quest!
Lucky Week started May 15th, and will end on May 22nd.
Here’s some videos to hold you over until mars is reached:
Comments are off for this postHyperscan: Hello World! Proof of Concept
This is the long-awaited Hyperscan proof of concept! As some of you know, I bought a Hyperscan Fall of 2008. Since then I’ve been following the homebrew scene, since you know…there’s no good games for the thing! These are cheap systems, and have some decent technologies behind them, so it would be interesting to see what could be done with it. Sadly, there was very little documentation about the system, so a lot of it had to be reverse-engineered. Special thanks to ppcasm for releasing this.
Here’s hoping to a bright future!
