This is the final music podcast of our weeklong podcast series. This time, Tony plays a bunch of awesome punk songs and ends the episode, and our week of shows with an incredibly epic song. I know that word gets tossed around a lot these days, but I really mean it. Also bonus points if you get what the title is referencing. The banner should help you.

BFM Podcast 37.5 – I Am Sitting In a Room http://blackflowermusic.com/blog/561-bfm-podcast-37-5-i-am-sitting-in-a-room http://blackflowermusic.com/blog/561-bfm-podcast-37-5-i-am-sitting-in-a-room#comments Thu, 17 Jun 2010 22:30:38 +0000 Andrew Eidson http://blackflowermusic.com/blog/?p=561

In this music podcast, Tony and Andrew chose to play only one song! The song is from Alvin Lucier and it is called “I Am Sitting in a Room”.

We suggest setting aside 40 minutes in a dimly lit environment to play this show. This is not really a “song”, it’s more of a musical ‘installation’ of sorts. You’ll want to be in a quiet environment so you can listen to the changes and eventual decay. It really is quite beautiful.

For those who might be against the thought of listening to the same thing over and over again, please be reminded that it doesn’t sound the same each time. (Besides, people listen to rap and techno amirite? hurr durr)

Perhaps a quote from John Cage will be of some inspiration:

If something is boring after two minutes, try it for four. If still boring, then eight. Then sixteen. Then thirty-two. Eventually one discovers that it is not boring at all.

itunes | RSS | MP3 | podcast@blackflowermusic.com | twitter | Facebook | Blackplanet

According to wikipedia:

I am sitting in a room (1969) is one of composer Alvin Lucier’s best known works, featuring Lucier recording himself narrating a text, and then playing the recording back into the room, re-recording it. The new recording is then played back and re-recorded, and this process is repeated. Since all rooms have characteristic resonance or formant frequencies (e.g. different between a large hall and a small room), the effect is that certain frequencies are emphasized as they resonate in the room, until eventually the words become unintelligible, replaced by the pure resonant harmonies and tones of the room itself. The recited text describes this process in action—it begins “I am sitting in a room, different from the one you are in now. I am recording the sound of my speaking voice,” and the rationale, concluding, “I regard this activity not so much as a demonstration of a physical fact, but more as a way to smooth out any irregularities my speech might have,” referring to his own stuttering.

Lucier had also specified that a performance need not use his text and the performance may be recorded in any room. The composer himself has recorded the piece in at least one room he did not find aesthetically acceptable.

Also, here’s a video version of the same concept:

So we weren’t actually inside E3 this year, but thanks to the amazing power of the information superhighway it really felt like we were there!

On today’s episode we have special guests Larry Sterling and Geoff Chorney with us to talk about gaming’s biggest event. We cover all the major players, and discuss the strongest and weakest points of the show. We also do that thing where we pick a winner!

***DISCLAIMER***

We’ve been used a skype recorder to make this episode. That means the options available for editing random sounds out is limited. Please excuse any unwanted sounds, unless you’re into that sort of thing (pervs!)

As you might glean from the title, this episode of BFM is dedicated to the songs that will make up your summer, hopefully, if my big wand of influence has power over you.

I play a bunch of pretty new songs to help kick off your summer. I also got some songs from upcoming albums by Big Boi, M.I.A., The Roots, Kanye West, and Arcade Fire that are hotly anticipated this summer. Think of it as a guide to the hottest new music and what you will be talking about in the next couple months or something like that. However that would be pretentious and assume that you like the same music I do. So just think of it as a bunch of random songs that some internet asshole threw together.

By the way, that banner for the episode was made entirely with MS Word ClipArt, except the . and the text.

MediaList, a playlist maker for command-line linux media players http://blackflowermusic.com/blog/534-medialist http://blackflowermusic.com/blog/534-medialist#comments Tue, 08 Jun 2010 05:31:17 +0000 Andrew Eidson http://blackflowermusic.com/blog/?p=534 This playlist media kit is intended for use on Linux and Unix-like Operating systems. Its function is to take the annoying task of making a .lst out of a list of files really simple. Many command-line media players are unable to play folders of files without making a list first. Being that I am relatively lazy, I decided that the regular method require far too much typing.

With medialist, all you have to do is decompress it into your $PATH [EG: /usr/local/bin] and it’s ready to go. It requires bash and find, but chances are high you already have them.

Usage Example:

cd /mediafolder/artist/album
medialist
mplayer –playlist List.lst

If you’re using mpg123:

mpg123 -list List.lst

Supports avi, flac, m4a, mkv, mp3, mp4, ogg, ogm, ts, and vob

For purposes of this example, I am using the medialist script. All should work the same. I made the others for those who only wish to make a playlist out of a specific file format. Mplayer will skip any non-media files. If there’s a playlist file already in the folder, it will also add that to the playlist. Then again, if you already have a working playlist, I’m not sure why you’re using medialist. I’ve included nine other scripts that are exlusive to certain file extentions. If you only want to make a list of only the mp4s in your folder simply type “mp4list” to do so. There is also basic DVD support with voblist and tslist.

So there’s this new Mario game out on the Wii. We talk about it. We sure do.

We’re also in the habit of talking about cool other stuff like Beatmania, the new Major Lazer mixtape, Metal Torrent, kpop, silver age Japanese Idol music, and an addiction to Joss Whedon’s early works spiraling out of control thanks to netflix.

Ever heard of this site called Know Your Meme? I hate that site because they think they’re like a school of internet culture, when in reality they just take things 4chan and other places come up with and make money off it (like ebaumsworld). The people that read that site are often undrerage kids and become those annoying assholes they constantly spout off stuff like “IT’S OVER 9000! BE AN HERO NEWFAG LULZ” and I hate shit like that. I don’t want that to happen with BFM, so I decided to take action and do this music episode based on bands that we joke about often on the show and get you all up to speed. Better you hear it from the source than some assholes out to make a profit on other people’s work.

So, take a listen, won’t you? You might learn a thing or two.

[Netlabel] poisondreamer – She is Zero http://blackflowermusic.com/blog/507-netlabel-poisondreamer-she-is-zero http://blackflowermusic.com/blog/507-netlabel-poisondreamer-she-is-zero#comments Sat, 15 May 2010 21:31:56 +0000 Andrew Eidson http://blackflowermusic.com/blog/?p=507 Poisondreamer’s new album strikes like thunder today on the BFM netlabel. After years of no outside musicians on the netlabel, an artist so amazing comes along that it is worthy to be posted in our fine establishment.

Poisondreamer came from a spark when he realized noise and free improvisation is really a creative style of music. One can use anything to make music. It’s all art. Once poisondreamer realized he can loop himself drumming, or use a drum machine and add samples he gets from police sirens, to people talking to anti-drug PSA’s.

Poisondreamer is a man in his early 20s living in the state of Pennsylvania. He got his start in music when he received a drum set. He’s always been into drumming, and is also in a local indie band. However, his introduction to drumming, he says, has opened up a creativity window for him.

“I really like to focus on noise, noisecore and other experimental stuff, and I’m really influenced by old styled ragtime and jazz,” he said.

He mentions Merzbow, Sonic Youth, Atari Teenage Riot, and Navicon Torture Technologies as huge influences to his music.

Stream “Acid Drinking Water” for a taste of what the full album sounds like. If you enjoyed that, then grab the zip file to hear the other amazing tracks for free!

We have an exciting weekend in store with a live show and some other fun surprises. Our live show will be held in our hotel room and broadcast live on Ustream (provided everything goes ok). We’ll have myself, Andrew, and Rebelj12a from VGEvo along with some possible special guests we may drag down to make an appearance. Stay tuned to our Twitter and our Facebook for room location and Ustream details. Be sure to check back next week for recordings or whatever shenanigans go down at MGC and stay tuned to Twitter for pictures from the weekend.

As for this current episode of BFM, I’ve decided to play a bunch of new music. Now, some of it is really old in blog years, but it’s still pretty new: 6 months is the oldest song I have on here. I have a lot of hip-hop, some pop, rock, metal, ska, and an electronic song. You’ll find something you’ll like, I’m sure of it. Also, bonus points if you get what the title of the episode is from without using Google. What do you win? Respect.

In fact, there’s only one black metal song in the entire bunch! This episode is dedicated to people who feel the need to sing about Satan. One of ‘em is a Pagan band, but here in the Dirty South everything’s considered the devil if it ain’t Jesus! We start out smooth, then get into some heavier stuff, and finally top if off we have some devilish feminist glossolalia.

A little bit LTTP on this, but late is better than never. Andrew and Tony take a little bit of time to discuss and spoil Heavy Rain for you. So, if you’ve played the latest and greatest PS3 exclusive, give it a listen. If you haven’t, give it a listen anyways. It’s like playing the game, but in audio form!

In the weeks leading up to midterms, my motivation to podcast has been weakening. Excuses aside, we have a cool show in store. This time, we complain about lists and awards shows. The oscars were recently, so we talk about how useless they are.

We promised a Heavy Rain spoilers episode, and it will come in the form of a special edition. There won’t be any more full episodes until the live show. We’ll put out some stuff, but only special episodes and some music podcasts.

JUMP INTO THE FUTUUUURE

In our usual boring Agenda we discuss some new and old music. Apparently there’s a Wesley Willis podcast, and Tony is going to kick your ass in Street Fighter IV on the iPhone. I’ve also come to learn that the movie “Maniac Nurses Find Ecstasy” is more about death count than it is storytelling. Who knew!?

Anyways, are you as excited as I am?

BFM Podcast 26.5 – French People Suck http://blackflowermusic.com/blog/415-bfm-podcast-26-5-%e2%80%93-french-people-suck http://blackflowermusic.com/blog/415-bfm-podcast-26-5-%e2%80%93-french-people-suck#comments Thu, 21 Jan 2010 00:31:42 +0000 Tony Bowe http://blackflowermusic.com/blog/?p=415 Some fun things have gone down in the past few days, so I decided to address some of that with my first set. Other than that it’s a set of brand new music (two of the songs were released in the past 24 hours) and another with some older punk stuff from the 70s. Hmm, I seem to have an affinity with newer music and 70s punk, or at least that’s what it seems like on the show. Trust me, I have more to me than just that, like J-Pop, which is what we end this week’s episode with! So, won’t you give it a download and take a harmony joy bus ride?
